Quality Standards Type                Input

Description

A basic factor in the successful operation of a program of studies is the qualifications of students who are admitted into the program. Each curriculum has a philosophical concept in designing, and it is essential that student qualifications be set forth that are consistent with the nature of the curriculum. Student selection criteria must be transparent, clear, and in harmony with student qualifications specified in the curriculum. Tools, data, or methods are used to select students who are intellectually, physically, and emotionally ready and determined to learn, and who have adequate time to successfully complete the program of studies within the timeframe specified in the curriculum.

When reporting operations for this indicator, describe processes or show operational results covering at least the following issues:

          3.1.1 Student admissions

3.1.2 Readiness Preparation before Study Commences

Assessment criteria

Assessment to determine the quality level consider the overall picture of the operations in 2 areas;  student admissions and readiness preparation before study commences which will increase their readiness for studying in curriculum. Assessment level is a score between 0-5 as follows

0 – No system
– No mechanism
– No concept of overseeing, tracking, and improving
– No information or evidence
1 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– System and mechanisms are not put into practice, implemented
2 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are no improvement/developments integrated into the process
3 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are improvement/ developments integrated into the process from assessment results
4 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are improvement/ developments integrated into the process from assessment results
– There are concrete results from the improvements that can be clearly seen
5 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are improvement/developments integrated into the process from assessment results
– There are concrete results from the improvements that can be clearly seen
– There are good practice with support evidence, assessment committee can clearly explain why these are good practice

         Improvement Process

The  BEd- Science program had a decrease in enrolment.  Only one student was admitted.  This is evidence that the system of recruitment is not effective,

The  program lecturers met to assess the situation and had suggested to the dean the following in addition to the regular process:

  1. inclusion of students in the recruitment
  2. inviting  alumni  to talk about their experience in the college, and
  3. enjoining lecturer to do career guidance among senior high school students.

         Results and   Assessment

The process was not yet enough to encourage enrollees into the program.  The inclusion of lecturers, students, and alumni was limited due to the workload and lack of time.

         Suggestions for  AY 2022

The lecturer chosen to join the recruitment team should be given more time to be able to join the recruitment team and invite more

3.1.2 Preparation prior to commencement of studies

The program sets and implements a holistic system to effectively prepare BED Science students for the challenges of college life.

  1. Orientation Programs

The college conducts two orientation programs for the incoming freshmen students: one before the Intensive English Program (IEP) and another before the start of the academic year in June.

 1.1General Orientation Programs

The General Student’s Orientation Program aims to  familiarize the students with the college system and rules and regulations. The event is organized by Student Affairs Office with the cooperation of all faculties within the college.

1.2 Faculty Orientation Programs

Normally,  the Faculty of Education (English, Math, and Science) also conducts its faculty orientation for education students. The activity aims to welcome students as members of the education faculty; inform students of ethical and moral conduct as befits a STIC education student, the role of teachers in the society, and college regulations and discipline. The event also aims to motivate the students to succeed in their studies. In this event, each student receives the BED Student Handbook.

 1.3  Intensive English Program (IEP)

Before the start of the regular semester, the college offers an Intensive English Program (IEP) that aims to address the English language skills of incoming first-year students. The course is usually conducted from the months of March until May. The course includes several activities which aim to develop the students’ English proficiency. These include:

  1. 4 hours a day of intensive English lectures (2 hours for Reading and Writing Class; and 2 hours for Listening and Speaking Class)
  2. 4 hours each week for Guided Reading
  • 1 hour/week for General Knowledge
  1. 1 hour/week for Advisory Class

  • The pre-test exam was given to incoming freshmen students during the first week of IEP and the post-test was administered last week of the IEP period

         Improvement

The was not much improvement in terms of the orientation activities during this year due to the pandemic, however, the processes were done.
