Quality Standards 3.1                   Student Admissions

Quality Standards Type                Input

Description

A basic factor in the successful operation of a program of studies is the qualifications of students who are admitted into the program. Each curriculum has a philosophical concept in designing, and it is essential that student qualifications be set forth that are consistent with the nature of the curriculum. Student selection criteria must be transparent, clear, and in harmony with student qualifications specified in the curriculum. Tools, data, or methods are used to select students who are intellectually, physically, and emotionally ready and determined to learn, and who have adequate time to successfully complete the program of studies within the timeframe specified in the curriculum.

When reporting operations for this indicator, describe processes or show operational results covering at least the following issues:

          3.1.1 Student admissions

3.1.2 Readiness Preparation before Study Commences

Assessment criteria

Assessment to determine the quality level considers the overall picture of the operations in 2 areas;  student admissions and readiness preparation before the study commences which will increase their readiness for studying in the curriculum. Assessment level is a score between 0-5 as follows

0 – No system
– No mechanism
– No concept of overseeing, tracking, and improving
– No information or evidence
1 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– System and mechanisms are not put into practice, implemented
2 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are no improvement/developments integrated into the process
3 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are improvement/ developments integrated into the process from assessment results
4 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are improvement/ developments integrated into the process from assessment results
– There are concrete results from the improvements that can be clearly seen
5 – A system and mechanisms are in place
– The system and mechanisms are put into practice, implemented
– The process is assessed
– There are improvement/developments integrated into the process from assessment results
– There are concrete results from the improvements that can be clearly seen
– There are good practice with support evidence, assessment committee can clearly explain why these are good practice

3.1.1 Student Admissions

       System and Mechanism

The expected outcome of the indicator leads to strengthening the student intake process to the program.

Initially, the program followed the minimum eligibility criteria for admission:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in any academic discipline from an accredited institution.
  2. Original transcript of records and diploma
  3. Must be of good moral standing

The process of admitting the student into the program is:

  1. Potential students have submitted their Transcript of Records to check their completion of bachelor’s degrees. Qualifications shall be in accordance with the criteria set forth in TQF 2 and the criteria of the Teachers Council. All of them are regular teachers. Classes are based on the basic level of education.
  2. Students have undergone the interview and screening process.
  3. The students were notified through email or phone calls about the schedule of the interview.
  4. The program director, together with the instructors, interviewed the potential students.
  5. The program director and instructors handed over the interview results and the full-time program lecturers consider the students for admission.

       Process and Evaluation

The curriculum committee evaluates the process according to the system and mechanisms for accepting students. Common problems arose such as students’ level of commitment to finish the program which led them to complain about many required projects and assignments for a specific course that made them feel very hard as full-time working professionals. Some of the candidates lack English competencies which made them difficult to catch up with the lessons, thus they withdrew or dropped out from the course. The total number of students registered is lower than the maximum allowed number (quota) given by the government per cohort/batch.

       Implementation/Development

Preliminary Screening and Evaluation of Candidates

With the initiative of the program director, he required all the registered candidates to submit their self-introduction statement and self-introduction video. These served as preliminary requirements before the candidates will be given invitations for the personal interviews. Rubrics were used to carefully select the most qualified candidates.

Involvement of Faculty Member in Career Guidance/Marketing

For Academic Year 2021, one of the faculty members was sent to join the Marketing Team during Career Guidance to different basic education institutions in Thailand. The program director also sent communications/letters promoting the diploma program to schools where the college alumni were employed.

Strengthening Social Media Presence through Promotional Videos and Students’ Testimonials

For Academic Year 2021, with the initiative of the program director and technical support from the I.T. Department, recorded promotional videos and students’ testimonials were posted on the college’s official Facebook Page.

-Measurement of student’s competence baseline  at the starting point(first year)

-Writing a Statement of  Purpose(SOP) to check attitude toward the teaching profession at the starting point.

       Plan for process improvement

To strengthen the partnership between and among the college and international schools in Thailand, there will be a plan to organize an International Schools Association or Organization which will be spearheaded by the current students of the college as leaders.

       Result

There were 49 students who are admitted into the program. 100% are currently employed as teachers in Thailand.

3.1.2 Readiness Preparation before Study Commences

System and Mechanism:

The program sets a preparation system and process for new students. The program director arranged for the orientation session before the formal opening of classes. The process involves the following:

  1. Presentation of the instructors who will be teaching the program
  2. Articulation of the purpose or rationale of the activity.
  3. Presentation of the college rules and regulations.
  4. Dissemination of the curriculum content and duration.
  5. Grading systems
  6. Teaching profession courses

The students will attend two orientations:

  • The orientation before the start of the classes
  • The post-orientation seminar and send-off ceremony after the practicum/internship courses

       Process Assessment

Based on the evaluation results of the previous orientation session, it was found that there was a problem with their readiness to study the teaching profession courses. They suggested having a short seminar before the formal lessons start.

       Process Improvement

For this academic year, the orientation process includes a one-day Induction Seminar for students’ readiness in studying the teaching profession courses and to be more acquainted with the program. This was a well-planned preparation training or course that was implemented for three (3) consecutive years.

To recruit more students into the program, the faculty conducted a Virtual Forum for all prospective candidates to answer and clarify all their queries and concerns.

Future Improvements/Developments

Aside from the orientation session, the program director will organize an intensive training program that will address the needs of the students in their teaching profession at the early stage of their studies.

       Results

Based on the students’ feedback, there are highly satisfied with the seminar/training session. They became more ready, prepared, and committed to studying. The collaboration and partnership with basic education institutions in Thailand facilitated a significant increase in enrolment. This also resulted in an implemented MOU with Sarasas Group of Schools and Singapore International School of Bangkok (SISB).
